Bastian was diagnosed with Lyme's disease and treated with 3 weeks of  doxycycline in June of  2007.  He weighed 115 pounds at the time and afterwards his weight dropped to 104, not  enough for his size and he never regained it back.  On 11/16/08 I noticed he was drinking a lot of water and closed the gate so he could not drink more, he ran out into the other yard to play with the puppies and when they knocked at the door to come in I noticed his stomach looked enlarged although not huge.  I took him to the vet and they did an xray that showed torsion, they performed surgery  at which time they removed about a gallon of water from his stomach, nothing else.  The weight of the water in his stomach had caused it to twist.  When they drew blood work his  BUN and creatnine levels were very high indicating kidney disease.  Another Lyme's test was done and it was sent back at as a weak positive indicating  he had Lyme's for the past year and a half  but not enough to show the normal signs with Lyme's.  He was put on a strict diet and 4 weeks later he was in the final stages of renal failure and was put to rest.  A necropsy was performed at the University of Minnesota since there was a litter of puppies on the way from him.  The necropsy report indicated he had renal failure from the Lyme's disease and not a hereditary  condition.    I talked to my vet and he said less than 1% of dogs who contract Lyme's disease die the way Bastian did.

Bastian was a wonderful boy, sweet, gentle, noble and endearing.  He had a beautiful head, clean eyes, wonderful structure  and a puppy temperament, he will always be a big puppy to me and I will miss him nibbling on my ear.   A part of him will live on through his puppies and I already see some of him in them...rest in peace dear boy...till we meet again.
